"Fanling Golf Apartments" by Thomas Schmidt
Hong Kong has an acute shortage of land for housing, and a historic 111-year old golf course could be controversially slated for redevelopment in the very near future, and lost forever. However, could the redevelopment of the site provide a new golf course, in addition to new housing? What if an innovative sustainable elevated "sky course" could be created atop new low-rise apartment units, while preserving the existing mature golf course landscaping between fairways? Could this be a win-win solution for all stakeholders? Leveraging green roof technology, such a pedestrianized residential development could become naturally cool in the hot summers as well as provide protected social village centers during inclement weather and typhoons. Residents could be encouraged to walk, ride bicycles, or ride electric shuttles from their units to nearby transportation hubs along the perimeter of the site to encourage a healthy lifestyle, beneath a championship golf course.
