Study in Divine Proportion
PROJECT: Chapel Building
LOCATION: Homeless Shelter, Cornerstone Community Campus, Houston, Texas
USERS: Men, Women and Children residing in the Shelter Facilities
ORIGIN OF CONCEPT: The "golden ratio" generated from the geometric properties of the square are found throughout our natural world as well as in the celestial bodies above. The "ratio" is notably observed by the casual observer in the spiraling of the nautilus shell. The "golden ratio" has been used by architects, artists and designers for centuries to express aesthetically pleasing "perfect proportions" in spatial assemblies, whether in 3 dimensional physical constructs or in 2 dimensional compositions. The "golden ratio" can be defined as the "Divine Proportion".
CONCEPT STATEMENT: The geometric spiral of the "golden ratio" is used to create the Chapel section establishing the vertical spatial dimension of the building and used as an expression of the gently curved hand of God giving protection to those in need.
