Kaleidoscopic
This drawing explores the unique spatial character of Hong Kong, with its clusters of residential towers incorporating repetitive elements and self-similarity, which combined with reflective materials, gives the impression of looking at the city through a kaleidoscope. The image depicts one out of a series of courtyards that are part of the connection between two train stations in the busy market of Mong Kok in Hong Kong. This results in high pedestrian activity through these courtyards at an elevated level. Programs are arranged around the courtyards to emulate the jagged lines of the residential towers. The repetition of form, combined with the reflective materiality of the protrusions creates a kaleidoscopic effect. Public spaces, retail shops, restaurants, and exhibitions are experienced through movement as a montage composed of direct and reflected scenes from within the courtyards and the city scape outside.
