(re)generation
Located in Xiong’an, China, this kindergarten-senior center strives to promote the interaction between intergenerational groups in a manner that exemplifies the behaviors and needs of each. A new city proposed by the government in 2017, Xiong’an has been quickly growing; but with basic urban infrastructure still lacking, (re)generation is a proposal for a fundamental part of society that alludes to two major age groups: children and seniors. The project is formally divided into three sections - the existing structures (previously housing units) on the ground plane, the top path that serves as a playground and vast open space, and the objects that interject themselves within these two. The objects have been constructed around programs that further support interactive relationships, such as a gymnasium, library, auditorium, and cafe; additionally, the represented material characteristics of each convey environments that would become playful and engaging for both seniors and children.
