Porta Maggoire
This drawing depicts Porta Maggoire in Rome. It is a triumphal arch that celebrated the arrival of an aqueduct, which became embedded in the Aurelian Wall, which was punctured to allow for the circulation of the modern city's tram lines. The drawing aims to capture how architecture and site stretch back in time.
Building is both noun and verb. We could observe a building to better understand its spatial arrangement or the proportions of its facade. In this sense, architecture is as an object frozen in time. But architecture cannot be considered as static. Across decades and centuries, architecture engages in a dynamic interplay with its site, material, use, and users. Considering the systems, processes and networks of Porta Maggoire this drawing seeks to represent the infrastructure of Rome on one site as its been accumulated on, dissipated through, and manipulated by time.
