Retrofitting Post-Soviet micro-district
I am currently working on a dissertation which is devoted to the restoration and reorganization of post-Soviet residential areas according to needs of modern residents.
This micro-district was built in the 1970s and located on the left bank of Kyiv. All necessary public facilities are within walking distance and from the west it adjoins a large park. However, the macro-district has certain problems associated with Soviet planning errors such as lack of parking facilities, uniformity and poverty of the area around the houses, typical and repeating architecture. I’m working on a solution to these problems in my dissertation, developing a design strategy based on examples of Western and Central Europe. The solution is the creation of a multi-level underground parking, as well as the reorganization of zones along the roads, the introduction of a network of bicycle paths, the overhaul of buildings and their decoration with murals on empty ends.
