Domesticity at a Civic Scale
An investigation into the relationship between labour and domesticity at a civic scale within the city. The 'domestic' is a design for a performance space and the 'labour' is the workshops and retail units that run along side. The main driver for the design was the ability to create a continuous route through the building, much like a street. This 'street' in turn engages the activity along the riverside area of Broomielaw in Glasgow.
To create a ‘street’ through the building, the performance space facilitates both informal and formal performances using flexible components such as rotating walls to allow a continuous flow of people to pass through during informal productions.
The elongated length of the building creates a street that follows the grid of Glasgow, with the building acting as a walking route through the city that is bordered on either side by a main road and the river.
