"Past(CUT)Future: Re-imagining Penn Station" by Kanat Derbissalinov
Old Penn Station had its problems, but there was clarity in navigation inside and around it, as it had distinct features that were helping commuters to navigate in it, such as natural light and multi-level exposure, what came as a substitute in 1969 completely lacked any of those features.
Intervention that I decided to make, which consists of one major aggressive cut through the layers of Penn Station, intents to address issues of clarity in navigation. Starting at the street level cut goes all the way down to the tracks, exposing the belly of infrastructure connecting Manhattan to the track level, removing the barrier between private and public, helping in navigation by exposing and removing architectural seams, floors, ceilings, and walls.
