"The Mystic Mine" by Tanyadhorn Dumrongkijkarn
The project is a speculative exploration of the intersection between automation, IoT, vast mining landscapes, and local tradition. Located in an abandoned potash mine in Korat, Thailand, the design targets autonomous machines by repurposing the mine. It involves the study of traditional elements of heritage in Korat using subtractive processes by machine intelligence utilizing the conditions of the site. The mine is turned into a giant cultural park connecting Thai people back to the ancient kingdom of Siam. This automated design is a participatory design where machine actors are an extra participant. The machine receives instructions from humans and it studies the traditional art and craft style of Korat, focusing on the proportion, ornament, and scale of the structure. The site has become a landmark for the superstitious and explorers of the wondrous and uncanny landscape. It is a landscape where spirit and machine co-exist.
