"Gurudwara, a place of worship for the Sikhs" by Ekam Singh
The gurudwara is a place of worship for the Sikhs. As part of the thesis, Civic-dwara, this drawing was part of the preliminary research, contemporary investigation of the Sikh Gurudwara. Drawing on Sikh miniature drawings and Pichwai art, it is an architectural collage that represents the typology of a gurudwara as it exists in memory and multiplicity — being a construction site, a place of worship, a festival, a housing development, a community kitchen and more, all at once. Thus, the drawing is an attempt to collapse all these different functional aspects, experiences and architectural styles into one single frame. The Gurudwara by its very nature embodies Sikhism: an open door for everyone, a congregation built on the idea of bringing people together (through kitchens, water pools, schools and more) and a shared sense of service to the community (seva). The drawing embodies this spirit of the Gurudwara and Sikhism.
