"Serendipity architecture" by John Dimopoulos Ektoras Boltsis
Anastasia Christaki
Serendipity architecture is a design principle or design strategy that is based on creating an atmosphere of pleasant surprises. Here it is depicted as a parasite public space (PPS), an extra layer of architectural design overlaid upon an existing one. PPS does not design from scratch but instead lodges itself upon it, exploiting its powers and best qualities while at the same time antagonising and ideally neutralising its problematic ones. The plan shows a flexible unit-based system fitted upon a square in Athens. The system comes with outdoor furniture and has no particular use. It can be utilised as a series of pavillions, stages or simply hiding spots that offer multiple routes and spatial qualities to be discovered on an otherwise very strictly structured park. Serendipity architectures aspires to offer a playful, inconspicuous and safe way to reclaim territory for children, adults and discriminated groups in an alienated urban space.
