"Palimpsest" by Jing Liao
This disobedient parallel drawing details the composition and activity of an imagined archeological museum in Rome.
Echoing the scale and gesture of the Temple of Claudius foundation defining the site boundary, a supersized plinth becomes both building and landscape, itself geometrically identifiable and harmonious in the landscape of surrounding Roman monuments.
Seeking to reconcile the physical and social tensions inherent in building museum space in the eternal city, an intensely layered "two-grounds" approach integrates both local and tourist life while celebrating the historic urban build up of the site. Layers of movement and programming are expressed and intertwined in super-scaled architectural and structural elements.
Giant "beams" containing exhibition space of paradoxical heavy-light tectonic expression span the trench of the subterranean museum hall and structurally bear the expansive above-ground public space. Apetures of varying character on the plinth surface enable artifacts to be viewed by visitors and public alike.
