"Forest Canopy: What goes up... is where it's goin' down." by Pablo Mora
Here's the unfortunate reality: cities replace forests. We're forced to choose between ‘architecture’ or ‘nature’ --but, a brilliant Frenchman assures us that we can 'have our cake, and eat it to too'!
In that magnificent, enormous, glistening bald head of his, Le Corbusier conceived his fifth principle of architecture: ANY space taken away from nature (by a building) must be given back (on that structure’s roof). Le Corbusier would tuck his architecture snugly between the ground and the dirt and plants. In this way, our ‘boxy’ buildings have potential: vertical walls do not eliminate the ground, but rather simply elevate it!
Endowing sidewalks with the occasional tree is a step in the right direction, but cities have the potential for so much more! And our heads --whether graced with hair or not --can certainly think up ways to maintain natural spaces without sacrificing the chance to make gorgeous, wacky buildings.
