"Queen Victoria Market Library" by Weian Lim
The Queen Victoria Market Library is an idea exercise to envisage a new central library and civic monument for the city of Melbourne, Australia. Located next to present-day Queen Victoria Market, the site is unique in its geography in that it functions as a physical and metaphoric linchpin serving the communities of three inner-city neighbourhoods. In a city where population growth increases yearly, the library aims to serve its growing communities whilst presenting a physically commentary of the city’s march towards densification. This section cut is designed to gently suggest an “inverted city skyline”. Floor plates taper upwards to resemble a monolithic mass looming overhead – a not-so-subtle manifestation of the idea of ‘over-densification’ precariously hanging above. The library is propped up on slender pylons, suggesting a fragility in the superstructure, hinting that should we be not careful, it could all fall down around us.
