"Geostory of the Landfill: An Environmental Wake-Up Call" by Mohamad Alamin Younis
Most cities around the globe follow a linear model in their operation: a flow of input/supply – be it energy, water, people, food, vehicles, and material – is processed and consumed resulting into an output flow of sewage, waste, and pollution. This abstract illustration paints how anthropic actions and inappropriate urban management – especially in the context of waste management – could lead to an urban, social, economic, and environmental dismantling of the city’s fabric. Fed by the ever increasing population, centralized landfills – when poorly managed – grow bigger year by year in height and size, putting the environment at risk for a colossal disaster. Through this provocative apocalyptic moment, the layering of the earth’s strata could be an indicator of how the degree of water contamination is exacerbated in deeper soil due to leakage of leachate from the landfill, disconnecting the city from its waterfront. Save the earth.
