"Test of Time" by Gregory DiNapoli
Not every piece of architecture is designed to be permanent, but some buildings are so vital that they must be built to last. Lighthouses served such an integral role in the development of our country that they were designed and built to last for centuries. Old Baldy lighthouse in North Carolina, the 12th oldest standing lighthouse in the United States, proudly and gracefully wears its age like a badge of honor. The countless patches of stucco covering its massively thick brick walls each must have a story to tell as the tower has survived erosion threats, hurricanes, both civil and world wars, and decades of neglect over its 200+ year life. Now a protected landmark, Old Baldy is a shining example of architecture both serving its function and standing the test of time.
