"Empire State Host" by Adrian Cruz
The Empire State Building once stood as a symbol for American might and willingness; it expressed the change in building technologies and was a catalyst for future skyscrapers in New York City. Although its purpose has shifted throughout its lifetime - it went from being an important node housing office and corporate spaces to simply acting as a spectacle within a sea of skyscrapers. This drawing expresses the idea of the Empire State Building reinventing itself by transforming into a host, as a way of bringing new life into the building and to its context. The parasite clings, cantilevers, and penetrates the building - dispersing spores that rethink both residential and retail spaces within a densely urban area. The drawing also reimagines the building existing with this parasite attached to it, just after its completion in 1931.
